JMI’s Diving Program...
Learn to dive and see the world differently! That is what the well-known dive shops advertise. Most of our students come to Jacksonville Marine Institute with numerous social, educational, and behavioral challenges – so why teach them a fun activity like diving?
Some of the basics: Before being permitted to join the 3-week course, students are rigorously scrutinized by the staff and dive instructor. To be considered, students must show positive, acceptable behavior; complete all educational assignments; attend school daily; exhibit good social skills; respect fellow classmates and staff; and above all, show a willingness to learn.
Generally, there are six students per dive course. The course is educational and physically intensive for many of the students, with the first few days especially demanding for some.
With the Instructor’s guidance, students overcome these physical challenges and in the process, learn that with a helping hand and hard work, almost anything in life can be overcome.
So, why teach at-risk kids to dive? Removing youth from their normal comfort zone and teaching them to dive helps to boost their self-esteem, become more confident, and to appreciate the joy of learning. The rewards associated with a student completing JMI’s dive course are all positive steps towards a better person prideful of having worked through challenges to become a certified diver. |
